I started reading Gary Cartwright’s articles in college, when I interned at Texas Monthly. His book Galveston: A History of the Island (http://www.amazon.com/Galveston-History-Island-Gary-Cartwright/dp/0689119917) was a major inspiration in writing THE GALVESTON CHRONICLES. When I was in Italy for a summer, working on an early draft of the novel, I only had one quote on my writing desk and it was from a 1975 article Gary wrote called “Who Was Jack Ruby?”
The line was “Jack Ruby was a foulmouthed, mean-tempered purde who loved children and hated ethnic jokes.” That is just one example of why I love Gary’s writing. Here is another, an article called “Consider the Oyster” about Gulf Coast oystermen. You have to sign up for a free online account with Texas Monthly to read the whole article, but it’s worth it.
